They say I have EPILEPSY- what is "Epilepsy"?
Epilepsy is a nervous system disorder that produces sudden, intense bursts of electrical activity in the brain. This abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes seizures, which may affect a person's muscle control, movement, speech, vision, or awareness.

Currently there are over 2 million Americans with a diagnosis of epilepsy.  There are also people
who do not realize that they have epilepsy, often because they do not remember having a seizure,
do not realize that that their symptoms represent a seizure, or only have seizures when they are asleep.

What does a Comprehensive Epilepsy Program do?

  • Confirm or CHANGE the diagnosis  - many patients come to us mis-diagnosed!
  • If epilepsy is confirmed we determine what type of siezure disorder an individual has;
  • Determine the impact of the epilepsy on the individual's quality of life socially and occupationally;
  • Determine the best course of treatment for the patient and their specific epilepsy type.

    For most, this will involve changing seizure medications to control seizures and minimize side effects

    For some, brain surgery will be an excellent option to control seizures- Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) is an option when medications fail and brain surgery is not an option

  • We offer clinical trials of novel and experimental medications for individuals with uncontrolled seizures.
